Dayton Utility Bridge Main Span Replacement
DOWL has been inspecting this timber suspension utility and pedestrian bridge for the City of Dayton since 2000. In 2018, DOWL’s inspection team recommended closing the bridge to pedestrians due to significant decay in the timber towers. DOWL performed two alternative analyses, including evaluating a trenchless crossing; evaluating replacement alternatives; and preparing cost estimates and conceptual drawings for this pedestrian bridge. DOWL presented the alternatives to the City Council and achieved support for the preferred alternative. We provided support to the City to secure more than $5.5M to replace the main span of the bridge with a 220-foot-long prefabricated steel truss. DOWL then provided final design for the main span replacement.
