Fremont County School District #1 Bus Barn Parking Improvements
The Fremont County School District No. 1 (FCSD1) Bus Barn Improvements Project in Lander, Wyoming was part of a term contract for parking lot improvements throughout the school district. Design Phase services for this 3.4-acre parking lot included geotechnical engineering, surveying, and parking lot design while construction phase services included administration, observation, materials testing, and construction staking.
Geotechnical engineering included a detailed subsurface exploration to collect information regarding soils, groundwater, and existing pavement thickness as well as detailed pavement section recommendations for both flexible (asphalt) and rigid (concrete) pavement sections. Geotechnical challenges included relatively shallow groundwater and poor support soils. Based on the geotechnical investigation and deficient surface drainage, the parking lot was completely reconstructed.
The purpose of the design was to improve site drainage and provide a new paved surface. The team used Civil 3D CADD software to maximize drainage while matching site constraints such as building elevations. Final design included asphalt and portland cement concrete pavement and valley gutter. Both types of pavement were designed to withstand repeated bus traffic over the next 20 years.
DOWL also provided bidding assistance along with construction administration, including construction observation, testing, documentation, and coordination with FCSD1.
