Newport Dock 5 Replacement
DOWL’s work on the Port Dock 5 project began in 2016 with an alternatives analysis to evaluate repair and replacement options for the original aging timber structure. The final result was a concrete pier on steel pilings that features a new 80-foot-long ADA-compliant gangway that leads to a new floating dock that supports the increased loads. The new pier supports both pedestrian and vehicle loads and provides access to the Port’s commercial fishing fleet.
Following final design, the Port applied for and was awarded an EDA grant that helped to fund construction. The timing of the grant funding resulted in an accelerated bid and construction schedule, which was successfully executed because of the Port’s leadership, an excellent contractor, and our permitting team’s ability to secure the necessary approvals, exemptions, and extensions that were necessary to allow construction within the in-water work window.
Maintaining access to the facility on a 24/7 basis was of primary importance.
