South Central Firing Range
The Municipality of Anchorage contracted DOWL to provide 100% design and construction documents, bidding, and construction administration support services for a new law enforcement shooting range in the Birchwood area of Chugiak.
The South Central Law Enforcement Firing Range and Tactical Training Facility (Birchwood Tactical Range) provides a dedicated shooting range for Alaska law enforcement personnel to train regularly in real climate conditions. The project consists of four shooting ranges, a range operations building, parking, and snow storage area. The ranges include a 300-yard range, a 150-yard range, and two 50-yard ranges with 26-foot-tall berms for the backstop and 16-foot tall side berms along the length of each one. Each range also has a 20-foot by 84-foot steel canopy constructed over a concrete pad at the shooters end; bullet traps were installed in the backstop berms to catch projectiles.
